Description

Position: Full sun, well-drained soil – tolerates poor and dry soils well

Plant height: Up to 2m in flower

Spacing: 30 – 90cm apart depending on variety

Life cycle: Biennial – forms a large rosette of soft, silver-green leaves in year one, then sends up tall flowering spikes in year two. Self-seeds freely once established.

Sowing method: Sow direct or raise in tall pots (mullein develops a deep taproot and dislikes root disturbance). If starting in pots, transplant while still very young. Do not grow on until root-bound.

Good to know: A striking architectural plant beloved by bees and other pollinators. Flowers can be left to self-seed for a self-sustaining patch, or deadheaded to extend the plant’s life. Traditionally used as a medicinal herb.
