French Marigold Seeds

$2.00

Open pollinated seeds

When to plant: Spring through early summer, after all frost risk has passed. Can be started indoors 6 – 8 weeks before last frost for an earlier display. Seeds can also be direct sown into warm soil once temperatures are consistently above 18°C.

Germination: 4 – 10 days at 24 – 28°C. Sow seeds 1cm deep in moist seed-raising mix. Keep warm – a heat mat or warm windowsill speeds things up. Once shoots emerge, move to a bright position to prevent leggy seedlings.

Plant height: Up to 40cm – compact and well suited to pots, borders, and the front of garden beds

Spacing: 20 – 30cm apart

Days to bloom: 8 – 10 weeks from sowing

Life cycle: Annual – will self-seed freely if spent flowers are left on the plant at end of season

Sowing method: Start in trays and transplant once seedlings reach 5 – 10cm with their first true leaves, or direct sow into prepared garden bed. Pinch out growing tips when 10cm tall to encourage bushy, compact growth and more flowers. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to prolong flowering.

Good to know: French marigolds are one of the best companion plants for the vegetable garden – their natural compounds help deter nematodes, aphids, and whiteflies. Plant them as a border around dahlia and veggie beds, or tuck them in among tomatoes, brassicas, and beans. A favourite with bees and beneficial insects.
