3 x Sweet Potato Slips (Victoria Only)

$6.00

Only available to Victoria

White skin with Purple flesh.

Sweet potato slips are shoots taken from a mature sweet potato – each slip grows into a full plant.

How to plant: On arrival, wrap the bottom half of the shoots in moist paper towel (or sit in a glass of water) and keep in a warm spot. Once roots are an inch or two long, pot up into a small container with good quality potting mix and grow on indoors or in a sheltered spot. Plant out from mid – October onwards, once soil temperature is consistently above 18°C. Sweet potatoes are frost-tender – do not rush planting out into cold soil.

Description

Position: Full sun, loose and free-draining soil enriched with compost or aged manure. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged ground.

Spacing: 30 – 60cm apart. Vines spread widely so allow plenty of room, or train vertically over a support to save space.

Time to harvest: 16 – 20 weeks from planting, or when vines begin to yellow and die back. Harvest before the first frost.

Planting method: Plant slips with the roots down and the leaves above the soil surface. Water in well. As vines spread, push any trailing stems back under the soil to encourage more root formation along the vine.

Good to know: Use a low-nitrogen fertiliser – too much nitrogen encourages leafy vine growth at the expense of tubers. Young leaves and growing tips can be harvested and eaten throughout the season as a spinach substitute. Cure harvested tubers in a warm, dry spot for 1 – 2 weeks before storing to harden the skin and improve sweetness.
