8 x Egyptian Walking Onion Bulbs

$4.00

A unique heirloom onion that multiplies underground and produces clusters of small bulbils on top of tall stems. As the stems arch and touch the ground, the bulbils take root – hence the name “walking” onion. Plant one bulb and you can have a lifetime supply.

When to plant: Autumn through winter. In Central Victoria, plant from April to July.

Planting depth: 3cm deep with the pointed tip just below the soil surface. Space bulbs 15 – 40cm apart – closer spacing for harvesting greens, wider for larger bulbs.

Description

Position: Full sun, well-drained soil enriched with compost

Time to harvest: Around 5 months for bulbs – ready when tops begin to yellow and bulbs are visible at the soil surface. Greens can be harvested throughout the growing season as needed.

Life cycle: Perennial – does not need replanting each year. Multiplies underground to form clumps, and produces top-set bulbils that self-propagate if left to arch to the ground.

Triple harvest: Use the blue-green leaves like spring onion greens throughout winter, harvest the base bulbs in spring – early summer, and use or replant the top bulbils in late summer before they sprout.

Good to know: One of the easiest and most cold-hardy onions to grow. Frost tolerant. Save some bulbils each season to expand your patch or share with others.
