Asparagus Seeds

$2.00

Open pollinated. Approx 20 seeds.

A long-term investment in your garden. Asparagus is a perennial vegetable that, once established, will produce harvests every spring for 20 years or more. Growing from seed takes patience – expect to wait 3 years before your first proper harvest – but it is more economical than crowns.

When to plant: Spring. Start seeds in trays or pots indoors and transplant out once seedlings are 20 – 25cm tall and frost risk has passed.

Germination: 2 – 3 weeks at 20 – 25°C. Soak seeds overnight in water before sowing to improve germination speed. Sow 1cm deep in seed-raising mix and keep consistently moist. Seedlings are slow-growing in the first few months – this is normal.

Description

Position: Full sun (at least 6 – 7 hours daily), well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 – 7.0. Prepare the bed with plenty of compost or aged manure before planting.

Spacing: 30 – 50cm apart, with around 1m between rows

Time to harvest: Year 3 from seed. Resist the temptation to harvest in years 1 and 2 – allowing the ferns to die back naturally builds the root system that will feed your harvests for decades.

Sowing method: Start in trays or deep pots. Transplant into the garden once seedlings reach 20 – 25cm tall, hardening off for 1 – 2 weeks beforehand. Plant into a permanent, dedicated bed – asparagus dislikes being moved once established.

Good to know: Asparagus needs a dedicated garden bed away from annual vegetables. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in late winter – early spring each year as shoots emerge, and again after harvest. Cut spent ferns back to the ground once they yellow off in autumn. A well-prepared bed and a little patience will reward you with harvests for a very long time.
