Growing Dahlias

Dahlias should be planted in the spring, after the danger of frost has passed, typically when the soil temperature reaches at least 15°C. They can be started a few weeks earlier if kept protected from frost.

Dahlias thrive in well-draining, fertile soil. A slightly acidic pH of 6.0 to 6.5 is ideal. Loamy soil with organic matter, like compost, works best.

Plant dahlia tubers about 10-15 cm deep with the “eye” facing upward. Space the tubers 30-45cm apart for smaller varieties and up to 60-70cm apart for larger varieties.

Plant into moist but not soggy soil, don’t water them when planting to prevent rot.

Don’t start watering until the shoot has popped up out of the ground. Then water deeply 2-3 times a week, ensuring the soil remains moist but not soggy. Avoid watering directly on the foliage to prevent fungal issues.
